ELEMENTARY ART

GRADE 1

In Grade 1, students focus on the element  line through observation, inquiry and expression in 2D and 3D projects. They build drawing, painting, and fine motor skills while discovering expressive and technical possibilities of line and colour.  Students also explore artist's work, cross-curricular and imagination based projects.

GRADE 3

Grade 3 students connect art with their own stories through collaboration with the fiction writing unit. They explore different ways to express and illustrate ideas using line, shape, space, and a growing range of media and techniques. Through an open-ended 3D design challenge, an expressive printmaking  project using a variety of printing plates and painting to achieve a variety of textures to use in collages, students develop technical skills, planning, creative problem-solving, and confidence in communicating their ideas visually.

GRADE 5

Grade 5 students investigate proportion, exaggeration, juxtaposition, and visual relationships to explore how images communicate meaning and tell stories. They discover how shading, colour mixing, and placement create the illusion of three-dimensions. Through drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting, and comic-making, students develop technical skills, explore visual storytelling, and experiment with their own imaginative approaches.

GRADE 2

Grade 2 students investigate rhythm, repetition, pattern, and symmetry in nature, art and everyday objects through observation and exploration. They discover realism and abstraction as different ways of representing the world through art. Through 2D and 3D artmaking, students experiment with materials, develop visual awareness, and explore their own creative approaches.

GRADE 4

Grade 4 students explore the symbolic use of images through self-portraiture, flags, masks, and surrealism, discovering how artists communicate ideas and meaning. They learn to use emphasis to guide the viewer’s eye and create focal points through colour, contrast, and composition. Through explorations of space, colour gradients, and shading, students start to develop techniques to create depth, form, and dimension in their artwork
